Why is there alcohol in Bach® Original Flower Remedies?

Dr. Bach used alcohol, namely brandy, to help preserve the remedy so it lasts longer.

Throughout history, alcohol has been used in remedies and medications for its preservative properties. When creating his own remedies and remedy blends, Dr. Bach used alcohol, namely brandy, to improve the remedy’s longevity. Prior to Dr. Bach’s time, pharmacists would prepare their tinctures using rectified spirits, or pure alcohol.

Because the remedies are water-based, they need to be preserved to ensure they do not get stagnant or become contaminated. Alcohol is added to protect against microbial contamination, a common preservative used in many water-based remedies and formulas.

Bach^® Original Flower Remedies stock bottles all contain brandy as a preservative, and its purpose is purely for preservation, therefore it doesn’t alter the efficiency or strength of the remedies. The brandy source is grape alcohol, distilled and filtered in accordance to regulated good manufacturing practices.
