Five easy decor ideas to bring nature into your home
Spending time in nature can be liberating, helping to relieve worries, while providing an opportunity to soak in some vitamin D and focus on the beauty that spring can bring. While some are fortunate to have a yard or live close to open green spaces, some are stuck in a concrete jungle, and at times the same four walls. If you are finding it difficult to get outside, why not try to bring the outside, inside? Here are a few easy home décor ideas that you can try help create a nature-inspired indoor environment:
1. Indoor plants, herb gardens, terrariums
The first thing you can do to bring nature indoors is to literally bring nature indoors. You can usually find indoor plants and seeds at your local grocery store, but you’ll find options online too. Though plants can feel a little intimidating, you don’t need to be a botany expert to care for them, you just need to find a plant that works for you. Does your home get a lot of light? If so, opt for succulents, cacti, or orchids, as they don’t require much water and will thrive in stronger light. If your home tends to get quite humid or you’d like to turn your bathroom into a tropical paradise, opt for plants such as a Japanese hanging moss ball. Terrarium DIYs can also be a fun activity to do, creating little mini garden environments inside your home. However, if you don’t feel that have a green thumb and would rather have the look of nature without having to worry about keeping things alive, fake plants or dried flowers can be a great addition to any room.
2. Patterns and textiles from nature
Did you know many patterns come from nature? Take a look at a picture of a forest or a field of flowers and notice the lines and shapes the plants and colors make, crossing into each other. Pillows, throws and natural fabrics can easily add colors, patterns and textures to a room. Try to pick a color scheme: neutrals and greens if you’re going for a woody, cozy vibe, or bright, contrasting colors if you’re going for something more floral. Within that color scheme, try to find one or two patterns or textures. Mixing and matching these will replicate textures you find outdoors.
3. Natural light
While there’s nothing better than waking up to blue skies and sunshine, if you’re not able to go out to enjoy the weather, you might find yourself feeling a little bitter. Here are a couple things you can do to help you feel like you’re taking advantage of a beautiful day. If it isn’t already, try repositioning furniture you use frequently so that it’s closer to the window. For example, if your sofa is in front of the window and your desk is against a wall, swap them so that you can look out the window all day while you’re working. If your home doesn’t get much natural light, try changing lightbulbs from bright white to a warm yellow, this will create a more natural, cozy feel.
4. Nature sounds
If you’ve been longing to hear the sound of birds, crickets chirping or ocean waves, you’re not alone! And while hearing cars all day can start to feel quite draining when you’re trapped indoors, hearing nothing at all can also be a pretty lonely and even eerie. Close your eyes and try to imagine what environment you’d like to be in right now. Imagine the animals you would hear, perhaps the sound of trees whooshing in the breeze or a trickling stream. Once you’ve picked the environment, have a browse on YouTube for ‘nature sound’ followed by the environment you chose, there are so many videos you can pick from to play in the background. Not only can nature sounds make you feel like you’re spending time outside, they can also help you focus, meditate and relax.
5. Candles and oil diffusers
Now that you’ve got the visuals, textures and sounds of your indoor outside environment down, the only thing you need is smell — and this is easy enough! Floral, grassy or pine candles are a great option, but we also recommend looking out for an essential oil diffuser. The oils will last a lot longer and you can mix and match them to create the ideal sensory experience for you.
