I’m in love with the cities I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met.”  - John Green

Traveling is a fantastic way to expand our horizons. When we step out of our comfort zones we encounter new cultures while challenging ourselves to grow and see the world differently. We learn so much about life and ourselves when we venture out beyond our familiar towns and cities. Solo travel is even more powerful, forcing you to get to know yourself better, and become more comfortable in your own skin.

Find the best place to travel solo

While traveling alone can be invigorating, you should always do your research beforehand. Many travel companies offer solo traveler packages which provides added security knowing that you’re destination has been inspected and is safe. Read reviews on TripAdvisor, or chat with friends who have visited your destination before. Nothing beats trusted, first-hand knowledge, so reach out for recommendations.

Action step: Create a bucket list of your dream travel destinations. Decide whether you want to plan everything yourself, or use a travel company to help book your trip, and start checking places off your list.

Enjoy your own company

Not all of us are comfortbale being our own company, but it’s a healthy habit to cultivate; you will find yourself discovering new things, thoughts and come away feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to do a little ‘mind spring-clean’, clearing away all those latent thoughts that could be impacting you on a daily basis. Enjoying being alone is an empowering act of self-love, and one that will serve you well, time and time again.

Action step: Pack a journal, a good-quality pen, and commit to spending a set amount of time each morning on your trip journaling.

The journey is the destination.” - Dan Eldon

There are a few things you can do to prepare for your solo traveling trip, which will make your travel all the more rewarding. For example, read a novel based in your destination country, and create an inventory of key sites you want to visit to make sure you don’t miss a thing. And then once you’re on your way, don’t shy away from eating local cuisine, making friends, and creating video diaries of your time. But above all, remember to always be aware of your surroundings, and make sure you’ve let other people know where you are and what you’re up to.

Solo travel can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right planning, and a positive mindset, you will be off on an adventure of a lifetime.
